Why repeating patterns just keep on repeating

Repeating patterns in our 7 year cycles of life have some very clear messages for us, where do we begin? I was just reflecting on life’s strange ways of checking in with me, especially the repeating patterns that seem to just keep recurring, like an echo bouncing back from a distant mountain, or that same hole we fall into time and again. It got me thinking, why do these patterns continue to repeat?

Repeating patterns in our 7 year cycles of life have some very clear messages for us, where do we begin?  I was just reflecting on life’s strange ways of checking in with me, especially the repeating patterns that seem to just keep recurring, like an echo bouncing back from a distant mountain, or that same hole we fall into time and again. It got me thinking, why do these patterns continue to repeat? You know how we sometimes find ourselves stuck in similar situations or confronted with identical challenges over and over again? Well, my beautiful friend, it appears that life is trying to teach us something with these persistent repetitions. Each repeated scenario serves as an opportunity for personal growth and development. Think about it this way; if we don’t learn from a situation the first time around then what else can life do but serve up another helping of the same dish? The greatest lessons are often learned through repetition until we master them. These repetitive patterns aren’t designed to make us feel stuck or trapped but rather ensure we obtain valuable insights into our own behaviour, attitudes and actions. They implore us to introspect and evolve. By recognising these patterns in our lives, acknowledging where improvements can be made or changes are necessary, we allow ourselves the space for growth and betterment. There are theories that our life is gifted to us in 7 year cycles, each cycle has a different purpose and yet we are served very similar situations or tests to continually grow and develop. So, what happens if we keep responding in the same way? In my experience, the repeating event and my response to it comes up bigger and stronger than ever. How about yours?  Advertisement I thought the piece of writing below, by Portia Nelson, might be helpful for you to spot where this might be happening in your life today and in the past. autobiography-in-five-short-chaptersDownload So next time when you find yourself on familiar ground, this might be with a particular person, or experiencing the same response to an all too familiar situation, or this could be the moment before, during, or after making an impulsive move – take a moment to reflect on what lesson could be lurking beneath its surface when you are in the right safe space. Let’s remember that progress is rarely linear; it involves lots of ‘rinse-and-repeat’ or hole-like cycles before any lasting change happens. Sometimes the consequences of not making a change become louder and louder until we are forced to stop and really evaluate what happened and why, so please try to take note of those smaller signs. Let’s embrace these repetitions as opportunities – not obstacles! After all, they are one of life’s crafty ways of ensuring that our journey towards self-improvement never stands still. Anyway – enough philosophical musings from me today!  Please get in touch if you would like to work through any of these repeating patterns, or anything else for that matter. I am genuinely available to listen and support you.
