This week on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Rick Doblin, Ph.D., the founder and President of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelics (MAPS), to discuss the use of psychedelics, specifically MDMA, as a therapeutic intervention for qualifying candidates with complex mental illness, schizophrenia, PTSD, anxiety, eating disorders, and more. 

Rick’s life’s work is to help us see how psychedelics can unlock a deeper and more meaningful connection to ourselves and others. In this episode, he walks us through the history of MDMA, the research supporting its efficacy, and how it was whitewashed to vindicate the war on drugs. 

Rick Doblin, Ph.D., is the Founder and President of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, where he wrote his dissertation on regulating the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his Master’s thesis on smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. 

Rick studied with Dr. Stanislav Grof and was among the first to be certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner. His goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana as prescription medicines, for the personal growth of otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist.

Unlocking The Brain: Using Psychedelics To Heal The Brain & Expand Consciousness | Rick Doblin

PTSD is notoriously debilitating and difficult to treat, and yet for our frontline workers – nurses, doctors, police, paramedics, firefighters, military - being traumatised is a routine part of the job. Dr Anne Katrin Schlag is a Chartered Psychologist as well as Acting CEO and Head of Research at Drug Science. She leads the research for the Drug Science Medical Psychedelics Working Group, which aims to create a rational and enlightened approach to psychedelics research and treatment. Dr Schlag is passionate about actively including divergent voices in the rapidly expanding psychedelic ecosystem: from scientists and policymakers, to clinicians and patients, to the traditional wisdom bearers of these medicines. She holds Honorary Senior Fellowships at both Imperial College London and King’s College London and is mum to three beautiful children.

We are studying the long-term effects of ibogaine treatment on patients presently undergoing therapy at independent ibogaine treatment centers in Mexico and New Zealand.

*Ayahuasca-Assisted Treatment*
MAPS supports research into the safety and effectiveness of ayahuasca-assisted treatment for drug addiction and PTSD. We also support conferences, meetings, and publications about the scientific, therapeutic, sustainable, and spiritual uses of ayahuasca.

*Medical Marijuana*
MAPS has received regulatory approval to conduct a study of smoked marijuana for symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in veterans of war.

Kathleen Harrison is an ethnobotanist who specializes in plants, fungi, and worldviews that include healing, magic, myth, ancestral knowledge, and storytelling. She has done field research since 1975, in Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and Hawaii. Kat has been teaching intensive classes for decades, and is known for her way of seeing the interdependent relationship between nature, humans, and the invisible world. She is based in Northern California.

Paul Stamets is the author of seven books. He is an invention ambassador for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and was inducted into The Explorer’s Club in 2020. He has received numerous awards, including the National Mycologist Award (2013) from the North American Mycological Association (NAMA) and the Gordon and Tina Wasson Award (2015) from the Mycological Society of America (MSA). He has named four new species of psilocybin mushrooms. In 2023, he received "The Disruptor" award from NextMed. A new species of psilocybin mushrooms has recently been named after him, Psilocybe stametsii.


He is a dedicated Earthling, Knowledge Keeper, and is a leader in protection of ecosystems focusing on the roles of mycelium and mushrooms.


In addition, his work has entered the mainstream of popular culture: In the new Star Trek: Discovery series on CBS, the science officer is portrayed by an astromycologist, Lt. Commander Paul Stamets. His work with mycelium has become a central theme of this series. He served as the primary guide to the mushroom documentary Fantastic Fungi, which first appeared in theaters in fall 2019 and currently on Netflix with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A naturalistic micro-phenomenology of 5-MeO-DMT

This presentation shares preliminary findings from a naturalistic study of 5-MeO-DMT, conducted in collaboration with University College London and Tandava Retreats in Mexico. Using the micro-phenomenological interview method, we captured detailed, systematic descriptions of the lived experiences of 28 retreat participants. The results reveal an expanded set of qualitative categories that characterize the distinct phases of the acute 5-MeO-DMT experience. Additionally, individual case studies illustrate the richness of these experiences, alongside the frameworks and concepts employed to support their integration. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of 5-MeO-DMT's potential for both consciousness research and clinical practice.

This panel seeks a dialogue between the indigenous peoples of Mexico and the U.S. on their relationship with the entheogen peyote. The current status of peyote in Texas gardens and the Wirikuta desert will be discussed, as well as its relevance in the defense of indigenous tribes. Jake Singer (traditional Navajo medicine man) and Rogelio Carrillo (traditional Wixárika medicine man) will share their stories. Santiago Alonso and Matthew Schroeder will also participate, addressing the protection of Wirikuta and support for indigenous communities.
